Call right away if

• You can smell burning, or something is hot to the touch
• There are sparks, scorch marks or melted plastic at an outlet or panel
• The breaker trips again the moment you reset it
• Water has reached wiring, a panel or an outlet
• A line is down on your property or touching a building
• The power is out in part of the building but your neighbours still have theirs

What to do while you wait

1. 1If you can smell burning or see sparks, shut the main breaker off if you can reach it safely. If you cannot reach it safely, leave it and get everyone out.
2. 2Don't touch a panel or a wire that is wet, and don't stand in water to reach anything electrical.
3. 3Stay well back from any line that is down and keep kids and animals away from it. Treat every downed line as live.
4. 4Unplug what you can from the affected circuit so it doesn't all come back on at once.
